German analyst: Syria war could go on for a decade

The German government is planning to commit up to 1,200 soldiers to support the international coalition fighting the self-proclaimed Islamic State. A day before a Parliament vote on an extension of the Armed Forces mandate, Defense Minister Ursula Von der Leyen said that "solidarity is a motor that drives the political process forward but Germany has its own vital interest for peace in this region".

German lawmakers will finally vote on Friday. It is expected that it will prove the deployment of military personnel and hardware to the middle-east as part of the international military efforts against Islamic State.

Lawmakers have not always been so willing famously back in 2002 in the build up to the US led invasion of Iraq. There was deep rip between US and Germany as Germany publicly oppose that invasion again in 2011 Germany abstain from UN security resolution air strikes over Libya and withdrew some of their military hardware from that region. That hurt some of its allies. So it did mean that there was an early debate in Parliament on Wednesday.

Questions being asked around weather this was the military solution could be count productive in terms of acting as a recruiting agency for ISIL. Also asking whether it could made the further refugees to Germany worse than it is already, whether Germany has the military capacity, whether public have the will to stomach a long term military campaign against Islamic State.
