Russians shrug off sanctions, as IMF says country in recession

Tough times ahead in Russia with the International Monetary Fund cutting its 2014 growth forecast -- pronouncing the country in recession made more uncertain by international sanctions imposed on Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine. Antonio Spilimbergo of the IMF.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) IMF MISSION CHIEF TO MOSCOW, ANTONIO SPILIMBERGO, SAYING: "We are now projecting 0.2 percent growth this year for Russia with a considerable downside risk."

He also said Russia was in a recession. This comes as the West has slapped sanctions on some Russians and Russian businesses close to President Vladimir Putin -- a move shrugged off in Moscow.

The crisis in Ukraine has pushed relations between Russia and the West to their lowest level since the end of the Cold War.

U.S. State Dept.: Al-Qaeda affiliates pose growing threat

The U.S. says al Qaeda affiliates continue to pose a threat to the global community after the international community degraded the groups leadership. On Wednesday, the State Department weighed in on the threat when it released its annual state sponsors of terrorism report.

In 2013, we saw al Qaeda's leadership struggle to maintain discipline within the AQ network and communicate guidance to its affiliated groups."

Severe thunderstorms rage across northern Florida and southern Georgia. Driving is exceptionally difficult in some areas...as heavy rainfall and damaging winds batter the south. Firefighters in Mobile, Alabama carried people from their cars -- and homes -- through rising waters. A similar scene in Wilson, North Carolina, where flood waters damaged homes.

It all stems from a tornado-producing storm system that killed at least 34 people this week. Authorities said storms could drop roughly 2 to 5 more inches of rain in areas. And launch fresh tornados, before they begin to weaken on Thursday.
