The White House Correspondents dinner draws journalists, politicians, Hollywood stars and business executives. But centre-stage was President Barack Obama's speech. He got in quick with a joke on himself over the disastrous website rollout for his health insurance reform legislation.

He took a swipe at conservative opponents for praising Russian President Vladimir Putin.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "You'd think they'd appreciate a more assertive approach considering that the new conservative darling is none other than Vladimir Putin. Last year Pat Buchanan said Putin's headed straight for the Nobel Peace Prize. He said this and I know it sounds crazy but to be fair they give those to just about anybody these days."

It wasn't all smooth running...as Obama's video message marking the 100th year of the White House Correspondents' Association showed. More than 2000 people packed the ballroom of the Washington Hilton for this year's event.

Ukrainian forces continued their military crackdown against pro-Russian separatists on Saturday in the town of Kramatorsk. At least six people died in the fighting. Some Ukrainian soldiers said the rebels were using civilians as human shields. Ukraine's interior ministry said its troops had re-captured a television tower and the security services headquarters. This video of the Kramatorsk tv tower were supplied by the Ukrainian army. Russia's foreign minister says the U.S. should use its influence with Kiev to halt the military crackdown. Kiev and its western allies accuse Moscow of backing the pro-Russian separatists who've seized control of some parts of east Ukraine. In Donetsk hundreds of pro-Russian rebels stormed the state security headquarters and the governor's business premises. Staff had already left the building after the city fell under rebel control. Large crowds chanted 'We will not forgive Odessa' as the building was ransacked, a reference to Friday's clashes in which at least 42 people died. Pro-Russian separatists in the city have declared a People's Republic of Dontesk' and say they'll hold a secession referendum on May 11th.

Killer blaze at India firework factory
印度煙花廠發生致命大火
The blaze that ripped through this fireworks factory in central India killed at least 15 people, three of them children. Others suffered serious burns in the fire in Madhya Pradesh state. It wasn't immediately clear what started the blaze. The state government's offering compensation worth just over 1660 U.S. dollars for the families of those who died. Relatives of the injured are being offered half that amount. Fire safety rules throughout India are generally lax, rarely implemented and are not periodically reviewed.
