play作為及物動詞時，賓語前有沒有冠詞意思也不一樣，如： play the games是“遵守規則”的意思，play horse意為“玩騎馬游戲”，play the horses卻是“賭（賽）馬”的意思。play用于演奏樂器時都必須用定冠詞，如play the violin，play the piano，而play后接體育項目時一般無須用定冠詞。
