2014 Milan Fashion Week opens with show by Gucci and Alberta Ferretti

Hot on the heels of stylish revelry in New York and London, fashionistas the world over are now descending on Italy in search of the latest trends. The 2014 Milan Fashion Week has opened Wednesday with a show by Gucci, giving this shivering winter season a warm touch.

Gucci designer Frida Giannini goes softer in both palate and feel, while sticking with decidedly winter materials like leather and fur.

The colors are cornflower blue, sage green, and brushed pink blush - set off by neutrals in tan, black and camel.

A-line Nappa leather mini-dresses have ruffled fronts - a testament to the suppleness of the materials.

Meanwhile, waistlines are higher and hemlines are short, showing off knee-high leather boots.

Joining Gucci the first day in Milan is Alberta Ferretti, an Italian designer who unveils her latest Autumn-Winter collection.

It features Chiffon-lined jackets, alpaca coats, jackets embroidered with glass beads and skirts decorated with feathers.

"I have to say Italian fabrics are the No.1 in the world, which is testified by many designers. Now some brilliant chinese designers also use Italian in part of their designs, to complete a beautiful collection with good quality," said Mario Boselli, president of Italian Chamber of Fashion.

Milan Fashion Week runs through the weekend and into next week, with more than sixty fashion shows and eighty presentations.
