不少人一見到philosophy往往會不假思索地譯為"哲學"。漢語中的“哲學“是個大詞，總透著幾分高深的色彩。按照《現代漢語詞典》(第5版)的定義，“哲學”是“關于世界觀、價值觀、方法論的學說”，是“在具體各門科學知識的基礎上形成的，具有抽象性、反思性、普遍性的特點”。可是在英語里，philosophy不但出現的頻率要比漢語中的“哲學”高得多，而且詞義范圍也要寬得多。我們來看看The Concise Oxford Dictionary (第9版)給該詞的定義：
