Hagel announces increased missile defense system

The U.S. plans to deploy 14 additional anti-missile interceptors in response to a growing nuclear threat from North Korea. U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.

UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF DEFENSE CHUCK HAGEL SAYING: "The United States has missile defense systems in place to protect us from limited ICBM attacks, but North Korea in particular has recently made advances in its capabilities and has engaged in a series of irresponsible and reckless provocations." Although experts say the North is still years away from being able to hit the continental U.S. with a nuclear weapon, harsh rhetoric from it's leaders has increased in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the North announced it would no longer adhere to the 1953 armistice that ended the war on the Korean peninsula. The additional missile receptors would be deployed at a site in Alaska by 2017 and would cost the U.S. nearly $1 billion dollars.

Indians question rape accused jail suicide

Indian authorities are scrambling to address how a notorious prisoner sharing a cell with three other inmates was able to hang himself without anyone noticing. Ram Singh was the alleged ringleader in the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman on a bus in Delhi last December. He was found hanged in his cell in Tihar prison last Monday. Singh's parents said an injured hand meant he wouldn't have been able to do such a thing. They believe he was murdered. One former inmate says those accused of sex crimes are regularly attacked by other inmates. This lawyer, who has represented a number of Tihar inmates, says violence inside is common but underreported.

LAWYER, NITESH KUMAR SINGH, SAYING: "Violence per se is not a new thing, it's just that it never gets reported in Tihar prison because somewhere the prison authorities have this vested interest in presenting it as a model prison." Although some officials have said the prison is overcrowded, the former director of Tihar, Kiran Bedi, says it is a model jail providing counselling, yoga and meditation rooms for inmates.

Tihar remains India's largest prison and more than 12,000 prisoners are packed into a facility meant for about half that number. Ram Singh was one of five men on trial for the December rape and murder. All have denied the charges.

Boeing says Dreamliner fix will eliminate fire risk

Boeing could get its fleet of 787 Dreamliners back in the air after the company unveiled an improved battery system on Friday. All 50 of Boeing's Dreamliners have been grounded since January. Two battery related incidents including a fire were reported on crafts operated by Japan's national carrier ANA. Engineers are now fully confident of the battery's safety after the upgrade. The aircraft maker said at a Tokyo briefing it would encase the jet's lithium-ion batteries in stainless steel cases, and provide the power pack with extra insulation to prevent overheating. Boeing VP Mike Sinnett expressed cautious optimism.

BOEING COMMERCIAL AIRPLANES VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF PROJECT ENGINEER, MIKE SINNETT SAYING: "We believe it's reasonable to expect that we could have the changes certified within weeks rather than within months. However, if we learn anything along the way, than we'll stop and we'll change our plan if we have to and we'll react accordingly." The company faces pubic hearings in the U.S. in April on the safety of its lithium-ion batteries. Analysts have put the cost of the grounding at about 400 million U.S. dollars and counting.
