US President Barack Obama has said he supports legislation to reinstate an assault-weapons ban. He also says he is prepared to back any law to close a loophole in gun-show sales.
The announcement is the first time since the Newtown massacre that the president has offered any specific details on how he plans to address gun violence. White House Spokesman Jay Carney said it is clear the nation hasn’t done enough to address gun violence and Obama plans to move on the issue in the coming weeks.
2【Gun owners fear new restrictions】
In the aftermath of the Connecticut school massacre, gun owners are apprehensive about new restrictions. Virginia's Blue Ridge Arsenal was busy with customers on Tuesday (December 18). Many are fearful of loosing the freedom to own weapons such as the Bushmaster AR-15-style assault rifle, which was used in the Newtown shooting.
The group Gun Owners of America says limiting ownership is not the answer. Communications chief Erich Pratt believes potential victims should be able to respond to any threat.
GUN OWNERS OF AMERICA DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS, ERICH PRATT, SAYING (English): "Criminals will, or the criminally minded, will go after soft targets. They go after places where they are going to be the only one with a gun. They don't go after police stations or gun stores or gun shows, no. They pick places like schools where guns are banned, they are the only ones with a gun and we've made mandatory victims out of all these teachers and children."
The National Rifle Association (NRA) says it's prepared to offer contributions in a bid to stop further massacres. U.S. lawmakers haven't approved a major new federal gun law since 1994.
