1【Sandy barrels towards the U.S. East Coast】颶風(fēng)桑迪疾近美國東海岸
TEXT:Sandy hasn't made landfall in the U.S. but the monster storm is already making its presence known --- pounding the boardwalk in Ocean City Maryland and blowing through this dock hundreds of miles north in Massachusetts. Joe Theobald, Director of Emergency Services for Ocean City Maryland saying: "You run from the water and you hide from the wind. We are in response mode. We will go into recovery mode if necessary." The category 1 storm is barreling toward the East Coast and is expected to bring a life threatening storm surge. Hundreds of thousands of people have already been evacuated to higher ground and the subway systems in Washington D.C. and New York are closed ahead of Sandy's expected arrival late on Monday. The few who did venture out said they were doing so out of necessity. Georgetown University student Monica McNutt saying: "I'm definitely taking this pretty serious. As soon as we get what we need, I'm definitely going to get back in my basement." Nine U.S. states have declared states of emergency, and with the U.S. election eight days away President Barack Obama canceled a campaign event in Florida on Monday in order to return to Washington and monitor the U.S. government's response to the storm.

TEXT:As the United States' eastern seaboard struggles with epic flooding and massive power outages courtesy of 'superstorm' Sandy, many areas further inland are getting an early taste of winter. Here in West Virginia a blizzard warning remains in effect, with at least two feet of snow already on the ground. And in the mountains of North Carolina over a foot of snow was expected in some areas. At a time when the leaves are normally just beginning to fall, Sandy also had parts of Kentucky and southwestern Virginia looking like a winter wonderland. Sandy crashed ashore with hurricane-force winds in New Jersey on Monday night. With at least 30 people killed in the United States, she's the biggest storm on record ever to hit the mainland.

TEXT:Total darkness in Breezy Point, Queens where a massive fire gutted at least 80 houses in the path of superstorm Sandy. There are grim projections of power and mass transit outages lasting several more days, with more than 8.1 million homes and businesses without power in several U.S. states. New York's LaGuardia Airport serving the nation's busiest airspace, was flooded and remained closed. Surveillance video released by the Metropolitan Transit Authority shows water gushing through the Long Island Railroad tunnel on Monday. Authorities said New York City will likely struggle without subways for days. With six days to go before the November 6 elections, President Barack Obama is pushing federal disaster relief to the most stricken areas. The storm has dampened an unprecedented drive to encourage early voting, raising questions whether some polling stations will be ready to open on Election Day.
