TEXT:Russian president Vladimir Putin meets Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Vladivostok on Saturday. The two leaders said they were keen to further bilateral cooperation, especially in the Arctic which holds some 32 percent of the world's untapped oil and gas reserves. Twenty-one heads of state from the Pacific-Coast region are meeting in Russia to discuss ways to boost regional trade and cooperation - with both China and Russia calling for deeper regional ties to speed up a global economic recovery. Summit host Putin also met with several leaders throughout the day to push for more cooperation. He praised Russian-Peruvian relations with Peru's President Ollanta Humala and also embraced South Korea's President Lee Myung-bak. South Korea is Russian's third biggest trading partner after China and Japan and Lee said their relations were strenghtening, despite the global downturn. Putin also hailed Russia's positive relationships with Malaysian Prime Minster Najib Razak - who said Russia had helped Malaysia put their first man into space - and Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, however, was unable to join leaders at the summit's opening following the death of her father. Putin broke the news in his opening remarks where he expressed his condolences for the loss.

Obama, entered office during the darkest days of the recession, and has brought unemployment down from a peak of 10 percent in his first year. But the President has been unable to crack the 8 percent barrier - a fact that Romney's camp continues to stress. Polls show Obama holds a slight edge over Mitt Romney

TEXT:Relief efforts continue in China after earthquakes struck in the southwest, killing at least 81 people. 5.6 magnitude quakes struck on Friday (September 7) in Yunnan province. At least 820 people were injured. Thousands of buildings were damaged in an area already suffering from poverty and poor infrastructure. Across Yunnan province, more than 200,000 people have been displaced - many forced to live in makeshift housing and relying on aid. SOUNDBITE: 48-YEAR OLD FARMER, ZHU MINGGUI SAYING : "We're living in a tent, but they said they'll remove them within a week. We don't know where we'll stay after that, we'll have to see what the government says. This is the important thing, there's no need to think about other things that don't matter." Over a hundred thousand dollars have been allocated for relief operations, hampered in some areas by blocked roads and a loss of electricity. Officials say the death toll could rise as news continues to trickle out from isolated areas.

TEXT:Nicaragua's San Cristobal volcano covered in a shroud of smoky grey ash. On Saturday, the volcano, just north of capital Managua, blasted a 5-km high ash plume into the atmosphere. JOSE RAMON MADARIAGA, LOCAL MAN, SAYING: "Well, San Cristobal volcano exploded like a cork that flew upward, and the puff of smoke blew into the air." The ashy eruption prompted hundreds of nearby residents to leave the area. The government expects to evacuate 3,000 from their homes and has raised the alert level to yellow. San Cristobal is one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua's Pacific Coast and a major eruption could affect up to 20,000 people.
