TEXT:A tense stand off in this mainly Kurdish-populated town of Hakkari in south-eastern Turkey. Demonstrators were protesting the arrival of Turkish interior minister, Idris Naim Sahin. The minister, shielded by police, was greeted by jeers and catcalls by the crowd. As the atmosphere became more tense, police fired into the air to disperse the crowd - and Sahin was pushed into a shop for safety. The minister, who was visiting security forces in the area for Ramadan, was later taken to a local governor's office . Kurds using firecrackers and petrol bombs clashed with police in Hakkari as they mark the 28th anniversary of the Kurdistan Workers' Party armed struggle for Kurdish independence.

TEXT:Japanese activists prepare to head for the rocky islands in the East China Sea, which are at the heart of a territorial dispute with Beijing. It's a move that could spark anger in China after arrests earlier this week of activists who landed on the islands. Asia's two biggest economies have been feuding for decades over the island chain, known as the Senkaku in Japan. LEADER OF ACTIVIST GROUP GANBARE NIPPON TOSHIO TAMOGAMI SAYING: "With the Chinese activists just having landed, this is a way of saying do not mess around. We hope to convey to China and the Japanese people through the media or whatever means that the Senkakus are our territory." Before departing, the group held a ceremony for those who died around the islands in 1945 when two ships came under attack by U.S. forces. Tensions flared earlier in the week after a group of Chinese activists slipped past Japan's Coast Guard to land on one of the islands where they raised a Chinese flag. Japan, keen to avoid a rerun of a nasty feud that chilled economic and diplomatic ties in 2010, deported the activists within days

3【Japanese activists land on disputed islands】日本積極分子登陸爭議島嶼
TEXT:The Japanese flag flies on a disputed island in the East China Sea. Just days after Japan arrested Chinese activists for landing on the island, a Japanese flotilla decided to do the same. Around nine activists from a group of more than 100, swam ashore and waved the Japanese flag. The island chain is at the heart of a long-standing territorial row between Tokyo and Beijing. Known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoya in China, the area sits near potentially lucrative gas reserves. The tit-for-tat landing has raised tension between Japan and China, while rallying nationalist sentiment. LOCAL LAWMAKER FROM SHIZUOKA PREFECTURE, KAZUKO UEMATSU (Japanese): "I was hoping that someone with a real sense of Japanese spirit and courage would go and land and raise the flag. I just feel they've done a good job." After arriving back at their boats, the nine activists were questioned by Japanese customs. The government had denied the group permission to land. China had also urged the action be stopped. The dispute is one of many dogging diplomatic ties between Asian nations, rowing over rival territorial claims.

TEXT:The Three Gorges Dam was built to tame flooding on China's Yangtze river, improve transportation of goods and produce clean energy. The government maintains that the benefits will negate the 50 billion dollar cost, never mind the 1.4 million displaced people. But 18 years on, the environmental costs are still mounting. Ma Tianxin and his family were forced to move after geologists said the area behind the reservoir where his farmhouse sits, had become unsafe to live in. Song Weixue's family may be moving for a second time. New houses are being built as the relocation town itself is now deemed unsafe. 55-YEAR-OLD LOCAL RESIDENT SONG WEIXUE SAYING (Mandarin): "We moved here in 2002, but in 2008, some geological experts found in their studies that there are high risks of landslides in Huangtupo and in areas around the
reservoir, so they want us to move again. But so far, the government hasn't made any arrangements for our housing." Hydropower construction has slowed since 2006, due to soaring costs of handling displaced people and environmental issues. But Beijing wants to bring another 140 GW of hydropower capacity on line by 2015, in order to meet its renewable energy targets.
