TEXT:Smoke covers Aleppo city streets as a government siege rages. Japanese journalist Mika Yamamoto died there Tuesday from wounds sustained in a gunfight between Syrian forces and rebels, becoming the first Japanese national killed in the 17-month-old conflict. The award-winning journalist worked for Tokyo-based independent news wire Japan Press and was travelling with the Free Syrian Army. Colleague Kazutaka Sato, who was travelling with her, said Yamamoto was his wife and they had been together for fifteen years. He explained that he could do nothing to help her, as he showed her bullet-scarred flak jacket. Yamamoto's death underscores the hostile environment in which journalists operate to cover the Syrian conflict, in which 18,000 people have been killed.

2【China welcomes island activists in Hong Kong】中國歡迎香港保釣人士
TEXT:Chinese island activists sail into Victoria Harbour amidst cheers and applause in an unofficial welcome ceremony. They're returning to China one week after they landed on disputed islands claimed by both Beijing and Tokyo, sparking a diplomatic storm. The two countries have been feuding for decades over the island chain, near potentially huge maritime gas fields. All 14 people on the boat were detained by Japan upon their arrival on the island last Wednesday. Captain Yeung Hong was emotional as he recalled the moment he first saw the island. KAI FUNG NO.2'S CAPTAIN YEUNG HONG SAYING: "When we managed to approach the island, I didn't know what to say. We raised the flag, then I returned to the boat -- as captain I must get back to the boat -- after I got back to the boat, I didn't know what to say. I only cried for five minutes." Both China's government, which faces a once-in-a-decade leadership change later this year, and Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, are under domestic pressure to take a tough stance over the islands.

TEXT:With the Republican and Democratic conventions around the corner, U.S. President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney each made a push in battleground states on Wednesday, trying to convince voters to support them in November. In Iowa, Romney told voters he would work to build more jobs in America - and gave supporters this task: Mitt Romney, Republican presidential candidate "I want you to each find one person who voted for Barack Obama last time and convince them that we should take a different course. Remind them how disappointing its been over these last three and a half, four years." Meanwhile, in Nevada, Obama took aim at his opponent's tax cut plan, telling the western state's voters his own plan would grow the middle class. SOUNDBITE: U.S. President Barack Obama "The plan that Governor Romney has put forward would cut America's investment in education by nearly twenty percent. And here's the thing. He's not making these jobs because he wants to create jobs or pay down the deficit. He's doing it to pay for a new five trillion dollar tax cut that's weighted toward the wealthiest Americans." According to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, the Obama-Biden ticket leads the Romney-Ryan ticket 48 to 44 percent nationally - less than a week before the Republican National Convention in Florida.
