【before的基本用法】
before作連接詞用，引出一時間從句，表示時間“在……以前”之意
例句:
1.The direction of an electric current was decided before electrons were discovered.電流方向是在發現電子前就確定了的。
2.We shall discuss the problem fully before we make the decision.在我們作出決定以前，我們將把這個問題充分討論。
(注：由before引導的時間從句不用將來時態。上句謂語真實時間取決于主句的謂語時間，即“作出決定”顯然是在“討論”之后，故是將來時間。)
3.We had read the operation instructions before we began to test machine.開始試驗該機器以前，我們已看了操作說明書。(上句中主句用過去完成時是因為它的謂語動作是在時間狀語從句內過去時謂語began所表示的動作之前發生的，構成了“過去的過去”，故用過去完成時。但考慮到before本身詞義已把主句和從句的謂語動詞動作先后分清了，有時可以用過去時代替過去完成時。)
例如：
I left before he arrived.他還沒有到達，我就離開了。

由before引出一種特殊的“定語從句”：
1.It happened in the year before the city was liberated.這是在這一城市解放前一年發生的。
2.They did not reach Tianjin until May 2, the day before the meeting was to be held.他們到5月2日，也即會議召開前一天到達天津。

before的轉用法：在本情況下主句、從句各有情態動詞must，can等。翻譯時將原文主句譯成條件從句，前加“只有”，而從句譯成主句。例如：
1.We must study hard before we can effectively serve the people.只有（我們）努力學習，我們才能有效地為人民服務。
2.A great effort must still be made before the ideals can be turned into reality.只有經過巨大努力，理想才能變為現實。

before作副詞用，表示時間上的“以前”、“從前”之意，與其搭配的動詞或動作的相應形式（見例句3）多半完成式：
1.He has heard this before.他從前聽說過這件事。
2.I never met him before.（若用現在完成時也可）我從未見過他。

【before與ago的用法區別】
before和ago譯成漢語，都是“以前”，但含義差別不大。
ago:用于從當前說話或寫文章時刻算起的若干時間“以前”，動詞用過去時。
例如：
They began the experiment two days ago.兩天前他們開始做這個實驗。（指說這句話時的兩天前。）
before:用于從過去某時刻算起的若干時間“以前”，動詞一般用過去完成式。
例如：
At that time he said that he had agreed to this proposal two days before.那時他說，他兩天前就贊同這個建議。（以“那時”為基準，指“那時”的兩天前，當然不可能是聽到這句話時的兩天前了。）

【before long 和long before的區別】
before long:作“不久以后”講，切不要按字面譯為“長時間以前”或“好久以前”。
1.We hope to finish our experiment before long.我們希望不久（以后）就把實驗做完。
2.Before long, his work began to show results.不久他的工作開始見效。

long before:作“很久以前”講。原意為“……以前很久”，故也可譯為“早就”。long before不同，前者在其后面可以接名詞或一個從句；當上下文明確時，名詞或從句還可以省略。before long則沒有上述搭配用法。
例如：
1.We(had)heard about this new-type machine long before we saw it.這臺新型機器我們在見到它以前，早就聽說了。
2.We see a train approaching long before we hear its sound.在聽到火車聲以前，我們早就看見火車行駛過來。
3.It was long before he came.他過了很久以后才來。（注意本句的引申譯法。）
