Alan: I went to see Waiting for Godot last night. The play is, how to say, funny in many places, but the overall story makes people sad. And nothing much seems to have happened.
艾倫:我昨晚去看《等待戈多》了。怎么說呢,這部劇有很多地方很搞笑,但是整個故事卻讓人悲傷,而且最后好像什么都沒發生。
James: People sometimes call plays like this "tragicomedy". There are many amusing scenes in Waiting for Godot, but the plot is circular, so the main characters are not really doing anything or going anywhere, which indicates a pessimistic attitude towards human existence.
詹姆:有時人們把這類劇也稱為悲喜劇。《等待戈多》中搞笑的場景雖然多,整個劇情卻是環形結構,因此主要人物實際上既做不成什么事也去不了哪里,這顯示出對于人類存在的一種悲觀態度。
Alan: Yes, and instead of being bored by it, I find it is fascinating, although the settings and costumes are also very simple.
艾倫:是的,我不但不覺得它無聊,反而覺得很吸引人,盡管場景和人物服裝也十分簡單。
James: That's because they are carefully arranged and express some basic human dilemma. Actually theatre of the Absurd is influenced by a philosophical trend called existentialism.
