首先要弄懂中文意思，其次追求完美

(一) 套譯

漢語中的成語，英語中有一個意思非常接近成語，直接套用
call a spade a spade 實話實說；實事求是

reap what one has sown 種瓜得瓜/作繭自縛（區別褒、貶義和感情色彩）
kill the goose that lays the golden eggs 殺雞取卵/涸澤而漁
castle in the air 海市蜃樓/空中樓閣

過河拆橋kick down the ladder
格格不入 like a square peg in a round hole

（二）直譯

在成語所包含的比喻和語言內涵被另一種文化完全接受的情況下，可以直譯。

Trojan horse 特洛伊木馬 表示從內部起爆
sour grapes 酸葡萄 表示得不到東西的心理
Sphinx’s riddle 斯芬克斯之謎，表示難解之謎
a Judas kiss 猶大之吻，表示叛變、背叛

（三）直譯套譯均可

鑒于有些成語有對應的，但有些人喜歡把意思直接譯出來

to kill two birds with one stone 一石兩鳥/一箭雙雕
crocodile tears鱷魚之淚/黃鼠狼給雞拜年

聲東擊西 to shout in the east and strike in the west/to look one way and row another
掌上明珠 a pearl in the palm/ the apple of one’s eye
對牛彈琴 play a lute to the cow/ cast the pearls before swine

（四）意譯

有些比喻和文化內涵不能另一種語言作接受

in a pig’s whisper 低聲的
make a monkey of somebody 嘲弄某人
the skeleton at the feast令人掃興的人
a family skeleton 家丑

葉公好龍 professed love of what one really fears
毛遂自薦 volunteer one’s service
初出茅廬 at the start of one’s career

（五）特別容易弄錯的成語

pull somebody’s leg 嘲弄某人
eat one’s words 認錯，特別承認自己說錯話
dog-eat-dog 殘酷的，特別表示競爭
in the seventh heaven 極為開心

背景知識：

耶穌基督是處女生的，第一個血液純潔的人（英文名麥當娜表示純潔）
