　　第四篇講的是各種破案手段。最古老的方式莫過于審訊(interrogation)嫌疑人，警方通常以此獲取大量信息，而現今更常用的是各種更為科學的手段。有時警方毫無頭緒，就會通過“犯罪熱線”(crime hotline)求助于市民共同破案。知情者可以通過電話或者網絡以匿名的方式提供線索，甚至家庭成員也會在思想斗爭后鼓起勇氣舉報家人的犯罪活動。指紋(finger printing)也是尋找罪犯的利器，中國古人就用指紋來畫押。現代技術可以輕松地從犯罪現場提取指紋，與警方的檔案進行對比。另一種較為新式的手段，叫做心理測繪(psychological profiling)。犯罪心理學家仔細觀察犯罪手法，并順藤摸瓜揣測犯罪人的性格和犯罪動機，從而縮小嫌疑人范圍，最后定位完全符合測繪的嫌疑人。其實普通百姓也可以通過自己的方式來破案，只要稍懂電子技術，就能在家或者在辦公室安裝隱蔽的攝像頭(hidden camera)，有些虐待孩子的保姆就是這樣被抓現行的。這種方式引起了不少爭議，因為它牽涉到隱私問題(issues of privacy)。最后，還能通過DNA檢測的手段。每個人的DNA排序(DNA coding system)都是獨一無二的，只要犯罪現場有頭發或者血跡，就能將犯罪分子捉拿歸案。DNA檢測手段99%的情況下是準確的，很多已經坐牢的囚犯因此被洗刷了罪名，重判無罪釋放。
　　1. In high school, a good student is supposed to get a perfect score. In college, the teacher wants to challenge even the best students. Therefore, almost nobody answers every question correctly.

　　作為第一句熱身，此句難度不大，考生可以用我們上課講的三段式。“in high school”和“in college”兩個階段進行對比，并不是遞進。最后由therefore引出的結論最為重要，以防忘記可以先翻。

　　2. In fact, if you go to the Continent, to France or Germany, you find that city centers have been turned into pedestrian precincts and the cars been almost banned.

　　這句整體也不難，唯一可能對考生造成困惑的是“pedestrian precincts”，但聽的時候不要糾結，不懂就跳過，聽到后半句“the cars been almost banned”(汽車幾乎都被禁止)的時候，應該想到之前是跟本國一樣的情況---步行街。

　　注意句中的“Continent”，是指歐洲大陸，此話應該出自一個英國人之口。

　　3. People living in a town would never dream of walking. There are just too many barriers, pedestrian underpasses, broken pavements and traffic lights where you have to run like a rabbit to get across in time.

　　要注意筆記重點：中段長達4個的列舉---“barriers, pedestrian underpasses, broken pavements and traffic lights”，盡量通過符號圖畫的形式，邊聽邊聯想邊記錄。

　　4. Statistics show that lawyers are the most depressed of all professionals. Lawyers are always acting on behalf of someone else. Suicide is among the leading causes of premature death among lawyers.

　　關鍵字“depressed”可以通過畫一張嘴角扭曲的臉來表示，而省卻單詞的拼寫;“acting on behalf of someone else”可以記錄“代”一個漢字;“leading cause”就記下“① ∵”;“premature death”可以根據上下文，翻譯成“英年早逝”。

　　5. I’m afraid we can’t reduce the price of this brand of shirt. You know, $20.15 is our rock-bottom price. If you purchase more than 10,000 units, we can reduce it to $19.

　　唯一一句需要記錄數字的句子，3個數字按順序記好。“rock-bottom price”非常形象，表示最低價。
