On June 9, a 29-year-old former CIA employee and NSA technic contractor admitted responsibility for one of the most extraordinary leaks of classified information in US history.Edward Snowden told The Guardian he exposed the documents because he thinks Americans should know how the government has intruded on their privacy.

The whistle-blower told The Guardian that he’s willing to stand behind his actions in public because he knows he has done nothing wrong. “My sole motive is to inform the public as to that which is done in their name and that which is done against them,” he said.“I can’t in good conscience allow the US government to destroy privacy, Internet freedom and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they’re secretly building,”

Blowing whistles and chanting “NSA Has No Say,” protesters took to the streets in Hong Kong on Saturday afternoon in support of Edward Snowden,protesters challenged Hong Kong officials to resist pressure from other countries and show that Snowden’s professed faith in the territory’s “spirited commitment to free speech and the right of political dissent” will not prove misplaced.

Edward Snowden grew up in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.His father, a resident of Pennsylvania, was an officer in the United States Coast Guard;and his mother,a resident of Baltimore, Maryland, is a clerk at the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.He has an older sister, an attorney. By 1999, Snowden had moved with his family to Ellicott City, Maryland, where he studied computing at Anne Arundel Community College in order to gain the credits necessary to obtain a high school diploma, but he did not complete the coursework. He later obtained a GED.Snowden worked online towards a Master's Degree at the University of Liverpool in 2011.Before leaving for Hong Kong, Snowden resided in Waipahu, Oahu, Hawaii, with his girlfriend.
