Basil Hayward was a successful artist.
巴茲爾·霍華德是一位成功的藝術(shù)家。
He had nearly finished a portrait of a very handsome young man called Dorian Gray.
他快完成了一位名叫道林·格雷的英俊年輕人的畫像。
One day a friend of his, Lord Henry Wotton,
一天他的一位朋友，亨利·奧托爵士看見了巴茲爾畫的畫，
saw the picture Basil was painting and wanted to meet this young man.
想見見這位年輕人。
A few days later, Lord Henry and Dorian Gray met at Basil's house and went for a walk in the garden.
幾天之后，亨利爵士和道林·格雷在巴茲爾的家里見面了，兩人去花園散步。
"Ah, how lucky you are to be so young.
“啊，你這么年輕是多么幸運的事情。
There is nothing in the world as important as youth!" said Lord Henry to Dorian.
在世上，沒有比青春更重要的事情了！”亨利爵士對道林說。
"But time is your enemy."
“但是時間是你的敵人。”
They went inside to see the portrait and Dorian looked at his own picture intensely.
他們走進來看這幅肖像，道林緊張地看著他自己的肖像。
"I wish I could always stay young and the picture could grow old.
“我希望我能夠永遠年輕，而讓這幅畫變老。
Oh, why did you paint this picture, Basil?
哦，你為什么畫這幅畫，巴茲爾？
Why should it stay young while I grow old?
為什么在我變老的時候而這幅畫依然年輕？
I wish the picture could change, and I could stay as I am."
我希望這幅畫能夠變化，而我能保持原樣。”
Dorian was beginning to fall in love with his own picture.
道林開始愛上他自己的畫像。
A few weeks later, Dorian told Lord Henry that he was in love with an actress, called Sybil Vane.
幾周之后，道林告訴亨利爵士他愛上了一位名叫希比爾·文恩的女演員。
She was seventeen and very beautiful.
她十七歲，非常美麗。
Dorian didn't tell Sybil his name but she called him Prince Charming.
道林沒有告訴希比爾他的名字，但是她叫他迷人王子。
He told her that he was in love with her and he wanted to marry her.
他告訴希比爾他愛上了她，并想娶她。
Sybil's brother was worried about her and this mysterious young man.
希比爾的哥哥對這個神秘的年輕人有些擔心。
"If that man harms my sister, I'll kill him," he said to a friend.
“如果這個人傷害了我的妹妹，我會殺了他，”他對一個朋友說。
