I stepped aside to wait. When I had waited for a long time in vain，I decided to return home on my own. I walked a few steps, then came to a startled halt. Good Lord! Where was the street lined with gardens? Where had it disappeared to? When did all these cars invade it? And when did all these people come to rest on the surface? How did these hills of rubbish find their way to cover the sides? And where were the fields that bordered it? High buildings had taken over, the street was full of children, and disturbing noises shook the air. Here and there stood conjurers showing off their tricks or making snakes appear and disappear from baskets. Then there was a band announcing the opening of a circus, with clowns and weight lifters walking in front.
于是我走到一邊去等他。當我等了好久，他也沒來的時候，我決定自己回家。我走了幾步，卻吃驚地站住了。我的天哪！那條兩邊都是花園的街道怎么不見了？消失到哪里去了？這些車輛是什么時候闖進來的？這些人又是什么時候來到街道上的？像小山似的垃圾又是怎樣堆到街道兩旁的？街道旁的田野又到哪兒去了？高樓林立，街道上擠滿了孩子，鬧聲喧天。街頭巷尾站著雜耍藝人,他們或玩著戲法，或是讓蛇從籃子里出現或消失。接著，一個樂隊奏起了音樂，宣布馬戲表演的開始，小丑和舉重大力士走在前面。
Good Lord! I was in a daze. My head spun. I almost went crazy. How could all this have happened in half a day, between morning and sunset? I would find the answer at home with my father. But where was my home? I hurried towards the crossroads, because I remembered that I had to cross the street to reach our house, but the stream of cars would not let up. Extremely irritated, I wondered when I would be able to cross.
我的天！我一片茫然，頭暈目眩，幾乎快要瘋了。從清晨到日落的這半天時間里，這一切是怎么發生的呢？或許回到家，父親會告訴我答案的。但是，我的家又在哪里？我趕緊奔向十字路□，因為我記得要穿過那條街道才能到家，可是車流不息。我極為惱怒，不知何時才能穿過馬路。
I stood there a long time, until the young boy employed at the ironing shop on the corner came up to me.

He stretched out his arm and said, "Grandpa, let me take you across."
