第三十八章
READER, I married him.
讀者呵，我同他結(jié)了婚。
A quiet wedding we had: he and I, the parson and clerk, were alone present.
婚禮不事聲張，到場的只有他和我，牧師和教堂執(zhí)事。
When we got back from church, I went into the kitchen of the manor-house,
我從教堂里回來，走進(jìn)莊園的廚房時(shí)，
where Mary was cooking the dinner and John cleaning the knives, and I said: --
瑪麗在做飯，約斡在擦拭刀具，我說：
"Mary, I have been married to Mr. Rochester this morning."
“瑪麗，今兒早上我和羅切斯特先生結(jié)了婚，”
The housekeeper and her husband were both of that decent phlegmatic order of people,
管家和她的丈夫都是不大動感情的規(guī)矩人，
to whom one may at any time safely communicate a remarkable piece of news without incurring the danger of having one's ears pierced by some shrill ejaculation,
你什么時(shí)候都可以放心地告訴他們驚人的消息，而你的耳朵不會有被一聲尖叫刺痛的危險(xiǎn)，
and subsequently stunned by a torrent of wordy wonderment.
你也不會隨之被一陣好奇的嘮叨弄得目瞪口呆。
Mary did look up, and she did stare at me: the ladle with which she was basting a pair of chickens roasting at the fire,
瑪麗確實(shí)抬起了頭來，也確實(shí)盯著我看。她用來給兩只烤著的雞涂油的杓子，
did for some three minutes hang suspended in air;
在空中停了大約三分鐘，
and for the same space of time John's knives also had rest from the polishing process:
約翰忘了擦拭，手中的刀具停了同樣長的時(shí)間。
but Mary, bending again over the roast, said only --
但是瑪麗又彎下腰，忙她的烤雞去了，只不過說：
"Have you, Miss? Well, for sure!"

A short time after she pursued --
過了一會兒她接著說：
"I seed you go out with the master, but I didn't know you were gone to church to be wed;" and she basted away.
“我看見你與主人出去，但我不知道你們是上教堂結(jié)婚的。”說完她又忙著給雞涂油了，
John, when I turned to him, was grinning from ear to ear.
而約翰呢，我轉(zhuǎn)向他的時(shí)候，他笑得合不攏嘴了。
"I telled Mary how it would be," he said: "I knew what Mr. Edward"
“我告訴過瑪麗，事情會怎么樣，”他說，“我知道愛德華先生”
(John was an old servant, and had known his master when he was the cadet of the house, therefore, he often gave him his Christian name) --
（約翰是個(gè)老傭人，他的主人還是幼子的時(shí)候他就認(rèn)識他了。因此他常常用教名稱呼他）——
"I knew what Mr. Edward would do; and I was certain he would not wait long neither: and he's done right, for aught I know.
“我知道愛德華先生會怎么干。我肯定他不會等得很久，也許他做得很對。
I wish you joy, Miss!" and he politely pulled his forelock.
我祝你快樂，小姐！”他很有禮貌地拉了一下自己的前發(fā)。
"Thank you, John. Mr. Rochester told me to give you and Mary this."
“謝謝你，約翰。羅切斯特先生要我把這給你和瑪麗。”
