Blue Bloods' Bridget Moynahan: Standing Strong

In a new book (about shoes!), the actress reflects on how she survived the painful public scrutiny on her breakup with Tom Brady

Bridget Moynahan wasn't making much progress. She'd set out to cull her shoe closet but instead found herself keeping every pair of pumps, boots and sandals she saw.

"I couldn't even part with things I was never using," she says, sitting down to breakfast in New York City. "They all had a memory attached."

That realization sparked the idea for the Blue Bloods actress's newest project, Our Shoes, Our Selves, a collection of 40 essays by women from Padma Laksh-mi to Katie Couric on the memories associated with their favorite footwear.

"Women wrote about the heels that made them feel sexy or combat boots that had jumped out of airplanes," Moynahan says of the book, written with Amanda Benchley.

(Part of the proceeds will go to the charity Girls Inc.) "But they all represented a moment that affected them and put them on another path."

The book also launched a journey of self-reflection for Moynahan, 47, who shares a deeply personal essay in the anthology about the most vulnerable time in her life.

It was 2007, and Moynahan, then 36, was expecting a baby with her ex-boyfriend, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, after he had already moved on with supermodel Gisele Bündchen.

The firestorm of controversy that ensued meant that the actress, then best known for roles in I, Robot, Coyote Ugly and Sex and the City, was suddenly a tabloid fixture.

她在《我,機(jī)器人》(I, Robot)、《女狼俱樂部》(Coyote Ugly)和《欲望都市》(Sex and The City)中飾演的角色最為人所知。

"Being pregnant and having a baby are such personal, intimate moments," she says.

As she faced an unexpected life as a single mom to Jack, now 11, and navigated the relationship with Brady and Bundchen, Moynahan says the public scrutiny became too much.

"I would have cars following me and men hiding in the bushes," she says. "As a new mother you want to just protect your child. That kind of attention felt like a threat."

Then one day at Barneys—where she was hiding from photographers who had followed her—she spotted a pair of motorcycle boots.

"I thought, That's what I need. Let me get a little bit of my 'New York' back, a little armor," says Moynahan.

"I think a lot of women can relate to finding themselves in a life moment that has taken a bit of their joie de vivre out of them and then having that moment to reclaim it."

Though Moynahan is open about the frustration of seeing her personal life publicized ("A lot of it's not true, and that's hard!" she says), she's grateful that she's been able to give her son a safe and private life, along with her husband of three years, businessman Andrew Frankel, who is also father to three boys from a previous relationship.

Today she feels lucky she and Brady have been able to co-parent successfully.

"Tom and I made a decision to raise a child together, and we both found partners that not only supported us in raising that child but also loved our child as if he was their own," she says.

"I don't think you can ask for more than that. My son is surrounded by love."
