"Did you see him when you were there?"he asked.
“你在那兒看到院長(zhǎng)了嗎?”杰夫叔叔問(wèn)道。
"No, I didn't see anyone,"she said.
“沒(méi)有，我沒(méi)看見(jiàn)任何人，”她說(shuō)。
"The secretary wasn't at her desk and I just walked through to the back room and left the envelope there."
“秘書不在辦公室，我徑直走到后面的房間，把信封留在那里了。”
"Was anyone at your apartment when you got back?"he asked her.
“你回去的時(shí)候，公寓里有人嗎?”杰夫叔叔問(wèn)。
"No, I live alone,"she said, "but I was there from about 3:30 to just after 8:00."
“不，我一個(gè)人住，”她說(shuō)，“但我從3點(diǎn)半到8點(diǎn)后的時(shí)間在公寓。”
"Where did you go then?"he asked.
“那你之后去哪兒了?”他問(wèn)道。
"She went to meet me for coffee,"I said to Uncle Jeff, feeling slightly embarrassed.
“她去和我喝咖啡了，”我對(duì)杰夫叔叔說(shuō)，感到有些尷尬。
"Right,"she replied.
“沒(méi)錯(cuò)，”她回答說(shuō)。
Then she turned to Uncle Jeff. "You'll help me find those photographs, won't you?"
然后她轉(zhuǎn)向杰夫叔叔。“你會(huì)幫我找到那些照片的，是嗎？”
"I don't know. I'll do what I can,"he said.
“我不知道，我會(huì)盡我所能，”他說(shuō)。
Jennifer looked worried. I believed her and I didn't want to see her like this—desperate and unhappy.

I wished there were some way I could get those photos back for her.
