Castro Era Comes to a Close

The Castro era is coming to a close in Cuba after almost six decades. Fidel Castro took control of the country in 1959 and remained in power until 2008 when, due to poor health, he handed the power over to his brother Raul. This Thursday, Raul Castro is expected to step down as president and appoint vice president Miguel Diaz-Canel as president. Raul Castro will likely remain the leader of the Communist Party of Cuba, which Diaz-Canel is a long-term member of in this one-party state. Most Cubans today, including Diaz-Canel, have never had a leader that was not a member of the Castro family.
