French President Has Language Slip-Up in Australia
法國總統在澳大利亞出現語言失誤
France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, called the Australian prime minister’s wife Lucy “delicious” while thanking the couple for their hospitality this week at a press conference. Macron is fluent in English, but accidentally confused a similar French and English word. In French, the word “délicieux” can mean delicious or very agreeable. The latter definition, which Macron meant, is not used in the same way when referring to people in English. The English word “delightful” would have been a more appropriate word choice for describing Lucy Turnbull. Similar sounding words that can create misunderstandings in different languages are called “false friends.”
法國總統埃馬紐埃爾·馬克龍在本周的新聞發布會上感謝澳大利亞總理夫婦的熱情招待時，稱總理的妻子露西為“美味的”。馬克龍的英語很流利，但卻不小心弄混了一個相似的法語單詞和英語單詞。在法語中，“délicieux”這個詞可以表示美味或者令人愉悅。但是馬克龍所指的后者這個意思在英語中的使用方法不同。描述露西·特恩布爾使用“delightful”會更加合適。不同語言中發音相似但會導致誤解的單詞叫“同音異義詞”。
