Houses rise and fall, crumble, are extended,
屋宇建起又倒坍、傾圮又重新擴(kuò)建，
Are removed, destroyed, restored, or in their place is an open field, or a factory, or a by-pass.
遷移，毀壞，修復(fù)，或在原址出現(xiàn)一片空曠的田野，或一座工廠，或一條間道。
Old stone to new building, old timber to new fires,
舊石筑新樓，古木升新火，
Old fires to ashes, and ashes to the earth
舊火變灰燼，灰燼化黃土，
Which is already flesh, fur and faeces,
而黃土如今已化為肉，毛，糞，
Bone of man and beast, cornstalk and leaf.
人和獸的骨，麥稈和綠葉。
Houses live and die: there is a time for building
屋宇有生也有死：有建造的時候
And a time for living and for generation
也有供生活和蕃衍生息的時候，
And a time for the wind to break the loosened pane
有給大風(fēng)吹落松弛的窗玻璃
And to shake the wainscot where the field-mouse trots
搖動田鼠在來回奔馳的護(hù)壁板
And to shake the tattered arras woven with a silent motto.
吹起繡著沉默箴言的破掛氈的時候。
