"Let's let the children go off by themselves," suggested Mr. Arable.

Mr. Arable gave Fern two quarters and two dimes.

"Now run along!" he said.

"And remember, the money has to last all day.

Don't spend it all the first few minutes.

And be back here at the truck at noontime so we can all have lunch together.

"And if you go in those swings," said Mrs. Arable,

"And don't get lost!" said Mrs. Zuckerman.
“別走丟了！”朱克曼太太說。
"And don't get dirty!"
“別弄臟了！”
"Don't get overheated!" said their mother.
“別熱壞了！”他們的媽媽說。
"Watch out for pickpockets!" cautioned their father.
提防扒手！”他們的爸爸叮囑說。
"And don't cross the race track when the horses are coming!" cried Mrs. Zuckerman.
“馬來了不要過跑道！”朱克曼太太在后面叫。
The children grabbed each other by the hand and danced off in the direction of the merry-go-round,
兩個孩子手拉手，朝著旋轉木馬，
toward the wonderful music and the wonderful adventure and the wonderful excitement,
朝著美妙的音樂，朝著驚人的冒險，朝著奇妙的興奮地，蹦蹦跳跳地跑去，
into the wonderful midway where there would be no parents to guard them and guide them,
跑進那神奇的游藝場。那里沒有爸爸媽媽保護他們，指點他們，
and where they could be happy and free and do as they pleased.
他們可以快快活活、自由自在，愛怎么干就怎么干。
Mrs. Arable stood quietly and watched them go.

Then she sighed.

Then she blew her nose.

"Do you really think it's all right?" she asked.

"Well, they've got to grow up some time," said Mr. Arable.

"And a fair is a good place to start, I guess."
