"I'll explain," said the Fox.

"You must know that, just outside the City of Simple Simons,

there is a blessed field called the Field of Wonders.
有一塊被大家稱作‘奇跡寶地’的福地。
In this field you dig a hole and in the hole you bury a gold piece.
你在這塊地上挖一個(gè)小窟窿，然后放進(jìn)一塊金幣。
After covering up the hole with earth you water it well, sprinkle a bit of salt on it, and go to bed.
然后你在窟窿上撒點(diǎn)土重新蓋起來，澆上一些水，再撒上一小撮鹽，接著你只管安安心心睡大覺就好了。
During the night, the gold piece sprouts, grows, blossoms,
一夜的工夫，金幣們發(fā)芽，生長(zhǎng)，開花，
and next morning you find a beautiful tree, that is loaded with gold pieces."
第二天早晨當(dāng)你醒來會(huì)看到一棵漂亮的樹，上面長(zhǎng)滿了金幣。”
"So that if I were to bury my five gold pieces," cried Pinocchio with growing wonder,
“這么說，”皮諾喬完全入迷了，說道：“要是我把我那五個(gè)金幣種在那塊地上，
"next morning I should find--how many?"
第二天早晨我可以有——多少個(gè)金幣？”
"It is very simple to figure out," answered the Fox. "Why, you can figure it on your fingers!
“容易算極了，”狐貍回答說。“用指頭尖一算就算得出來！
Granted that each piece gives you five hundred, multiply five hundred by five.
比方說，每個(gè)金幣長(zhǎng)出五百個(gè)，五百乘五，
Next morning you will find twenty-five hundred new, sparkling gold pieces."
第二天早晨你口袋里就可以有兩千五百個(gè)嶄新發(fā)光的金幣。”
"Fine! Fine!" cried Pinocchio, dancing about with joy.
“好吧！好吧！”皮諾喬大叫，高興得跳起來。
"And as soon as I have them, I shall keep two thousand for myself and the other five hundred I'll give to you two."
“等我把這些金幣都采下來，我拿兩千，剩下的五百個(gè)歸你們。”
"A gift for us?" cried the Fox, pretending to be insulted. "Why, of course not!"
“給我們？”狐貍假裝出被侮辱的樣子，生氣地叫道，“什么？我們不要！”
"Of course not!" repeated the Cat.
“我們不要！”貓跟著又說了一遍。
"We do not work for gain," answered the Fox. "We work only to enrich others."
“我們這么做可不是為了謀利，”狐貍回答說，“我們只是為了讓別人發(fā)財(cái)致富。”
"To enrich others!" repeated the Cat.
“讓別人發(fā)財(cái)致富。”貓又跟著說了一遍。
"What good people," thought Pinocchio to himself.
“多好的人啊！”皮諾喬心里說。
And forgetting his father, the new coat, the A-B-C book, and all his good resolutions,
他一下子忘掉了他的爸爸，忘掉了新上衣，忘掉了識(shí)字課本，忘掉了一切好的打算，
he said to the Fox and to the Cat: "Let us go. I am with you."
對(duì)狐貍和貓說：“那咱們走吧，我跟你們?nèi)ァ！?/p>
