What I was thinking was that you are able to hear the languages that are here and its just amazing in World and Town,
where you have people speaking Vietnamese and you have them speaking Spanish,
and you have them speaking American and the conversation dialogues are so wonderful
and I was wondering whether you could read one of your dialogue passages?
Maybe that was something you wanted to do anyway.
Well, I can read. No, no, I can definitely read whatever, but I do think that one of the gifts is that you hear a lot more.
You know? Because you've grown up, I mean, normally, I mean we all listen to our parents.
I hope my children listen to their parents.
But there is a way in which because you are in a family where you are aware that they don't know a lot.
You know what I mean? That they're not very oriented in the society.
It's a way that you grow up kind of hyper tuned and you can hear everything. You know?
And I'm sort of, I myself I think there's a way in which you're not even aware until you start to write of how much you learned.
But there's no question that you didn't have the luxury or whatever of just sort of sitting there and thinking,
well what do I want to eat, what do I want to do? There's a way in which you're posed a little bit.
And like I say, I think that we take in many, many things that we don't know we know.
But then when you start to write, then you suddenly realize, oh my goodness, look at that.
Jim Carroll: So bring us a little bit wherever you choose into the world of the World and Town.
Gish Jen: I can see I'm not going to be able to get away without reading.
Jim Carroll: Well, you don't have to read. I'm just very struck by the fact that in this novel we have a Chinese-American woman
whose sight is both of an establishment Anglo-American male and newly arrived Cambodian immigrants,
who are on either side of this woman's world. And that's one of the things that's kind of striking about your book.
