And she explains this by the fact that we all have cultural maps.
And there's a way in which when you're in the old world you have one cultural map and you come here,
but between the moment when you, when you're giving up this old map and there's a time when you're taking,
redrawing a new map, there's a time in which you are very, very, very familiar and comfortable with the society
but you are not quite you know what I mean, you still have a little bit of a distance.
You can still see what it is. And in that window, there's tremendous creativity.
And I think actually you can see that very much in your book Maxine.

Maxine, you know, a million, trillion people have written memoirs and only Maxine Hong Kingston writes it in verse.
And as I was reading I just, it's really true,
it's just that sift. That we were talking before this panel of how often, I know Maxine has this feeling,
and I have it too sometimes, of being able to see something that other people don't see.
And in this case, I can see that Maxine, she remade it.
She could see that you could write this memoir in verse and that it will allow you a kind of freedom
that you don't see in other memoirs. Her book is very associative.
She can go here, in literary terms, you probably, those of you I don't know how many English majors are out there,
but we talk in poetry, they talk about parataxis,
that's when you put two things together with no apparent connection you just use juxtaposition.
And the number of times that Maxine just goes from here to here;
瑪克辛也是時時刻刻地從此吸收靈感;
just like that, she just effortlessly kind of leaps in a way you could never do in prose.
You know? In prose you would need the connective sentences, in poetry you don't.
And leave it to Maxine, of course, to see that.
And I think its just really great testimony to what happens when you have people in between cultures.
And so I just wish, if nothing else that people leaving this room tonight would remember that its not just that we're so idealistic
and we're going to get eaten alive for our idealism but actually it really is true that a lot of the creativity,
a lot of the innovation comes from people who have moved from one culture to another.
And so it is a real gift that we get and we also get to feel good about ourselves at the same time.
