In an interview with state media on July 14, the director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning Huang Yan said the move would encourage many people to move to Tongzhou District, away from the central and much more crowded districts of Dongcheng, Xicheng and Chaoyang.
It was the first time that a government official has confirmed a relocation of government offices is being undertaken. Earlier in July, state media reported officials said the move would be completed by the end of 2017, in an attempt to address traffic and air pollution problems caused by overcrowding.
