In today's podcast, McDonald's and KFC drop a Shanghai meat supplier after a TV report alleges unsafe practices
Shanghai Dragon TV reported on July 20 that Shanghai Husi Food Co. was found processing old meat into fast food products. Video footage from the report showed employees repackaging beef that was seven months past its expiration date into new products with modified expiration labels, and workers hiding this process from visiting McDonald's employees.
The report prompted the Shanghai food safety authority to inspect the Husi factory and close it. The meat processor, a subsidiary of American meat supplier OSI Group, says it will cooperate with the authority's investigation but insists the repackaging was "an isolated event."
The report marks the second time in two years that a KFC supplier has been hit by food safety allegations. The last such incident, in November 2012, contributed to a 13% year-on-year drop in KFC's same-store sales in China.
