In today's podcast, Alibaba Group announces a partnership with China's leading domestic automaker to develop Internet-enabled cars
After similar efforts announced by American tech giants earlier this year, China's largest Internet company has expanded into the in-car market with a platform it calls the "Internet Car." Most international auto brands have already signed up with either Apple's CarPlay or Google's Android Auto, while Alibaba has chosen to partner with the Shanghai-based SAIC.
The "Internet Car" will include Alibaba's Yun OS and cloud computing resources, the Xiami music service, and Autonavi navigation technology. Eventually the company hopes to leverage data from the system to improve traffic management or even build self-driving cars.
Alibaba's biggest competitors aren't far behind. In April, Baidu released a product called "CarNet," providing voice-activated location-based services. And in June, Tencent launched the Lubao Box, which plugs into a car's internal electronics to offer maintenance and safety information.
