1. 表示“空氣”，作為物質名詞 (不可數)，通常不與冠詞連用。如：Webreathe air. 我們呼吸空氣。Let's go out and have some freshair. 我們到外面去呼吸新鮮空氣吧。我們到外; We should die without air. 沒有空氣我們就會死。若特指，則加定冠詞。如：The air felt cold. 這里的空氣很冷。The air in the room was bad. 房里的空氣不新鮮。
2. 表示“空中”、“天空”，是不可數名詞，但通常要與定冠詞連用。如：The air was full of butterflies. 空中飛滿了蝴蝶。Therewas thunder in the air. 天空中響起了雷聲。
3. 表示“神情”、“神態”、“外觀”、“氣氛”“，通常與不定冠詞連用，若特指則用定冠詞。如：He has an air of importance. 他擺出一副煞有介事的神態。There was a comfortable air about herroom. 她的房間有一種令人舒適的氣氛。He had the air of achild who was afraid. 他顯出小孩受驚的神情。
4. 表示“不自然的態度”、“做作的姿態”，通常用復數，且不用冠詞。如：You needn't take such airs with me. 你不必這樣對我裝腔作勢。
how come 用法
How come 單獨用為"怎么回事？""怎么搞的？"之意，比方說你跟朋友打招呼問，how are you? 他若說 Not so good，你就可以問How come? 想知道發生了什么。這里Why也可以代替使用。How come 的用法大部分就等于 why ，但是它的用法沒有像 why 那么廣, 它通常是用在你覺得奇怪, 而問為什么的時候。
比如說，有人早上一大早要去 supermarket,你就會問他，"How come?" 另外, 當別人問你一個問題, 而你不想回答時可以說 "How come?" 相當于"Why do you ask that?" 也就是說 "It's none of your business! "
雖然 how come 跟 why 的用法上差不多, 但二者的問法不同。
例如, "Why is our oven broken?" 換成 how come 的話, 要說成, "How come our oven is broken?" 注意一下, 這二句的 be 動詞位置是不一樣的。
