stand by:在電影中是指"站在一旁（什么也不做）"，
相當(dāng)于我們漢語常說的"袖手旁觀"，
不過事實上，stand by一般用來表達對某人的支持，
如，He stood by her throughout the trial as he
believed her to be innocent.
"在整個審訊過程中，他都站在她的一邊，因為他相信她是無
辜的"；
另外，stand by還經(jīng)常在口語中表示"作好準(zhǔn)備"，相當(dāng)于be
ready，
例如，The emergency services were standing by waiting
for the plane to land.
"急救隊已嚴(yán)陣以待，等著飛機的降落"，
想必飛機上是出現(xiàn)了需要緊急救護的乘客了。

這個作者現(xiàn)在可能已經(jīng)死了，

humanity：可以指"人性"，這也是2012這部電影的一個重要
元素之一；
humanity也可以指"全人類"，
例如，They face charges of committing crimes against
humanity.
"他們面臨反人類罪的指揮"，這種罪通常也是像薩達姆這種
級別的人才能觸犯的。

barely：是個既簡單但又不簡單的詞，咱們看幾個例子體會
一下。
We could barely see the road in the fog. "在大霧中，
我?guī)缀蹩床坏铰?，
在這我要提個問題，到底是"看到路"還是"看不到路"？
繼續(xù)看例子，They produced barely enough for their
needs every year．
＂他們每年的收成只能勉強糊口＂，
我的問題還是："他們的糧食夠吃嗎？"；
再看第三個例子，He is barely old enough to drive a
car.
"他也只是勉強達到領(lǐng)駕照的年齡"，現(xiàn)在的問題是"他的年齡
夠大嗎？"。
很明顯，以上三個問題的答案都是肯定的，因為barely的意
義是"幾乎不"，
比如說，你跟你的一個十多年沒見過的小學(xué)一年級的同學(xué)遇
上，
你說你幾乎認(rèn)不出他，但事實上你還是認(rèn)出了這個當(dāng)年老拽
你辮子的小壞蛋。

extinction：名詞，指"滅絕"，
比如說，the extinction of a species "物種的滅絕"。
數(shù)億年前，發(fā)生過the extinction of the dinosaurs　"恐
龍的滅絕"。
extinction的動詞形式是extinct，
據(jù)說澳洲考拉再過３０年就要從地球上消失了，
英文可以說Koalas may go extinct in 30 years.
