The swineherd and the beggar went on to the palace. At the door of the court in the dust lay the dog, Argus,
whom in the old days Ulysses had reared. But before the dog had grown his full size, Ulysses sailed to Troy.
While he was strong, men used him in the chase, hunting wild goats and deer. But now he lay neglected,
and no man spoke kindly to him. Well the dog knew his master, and even though he could not rise and come to him,
he wagged his tail and drooped his ears. Ulysses, when he saw him, wiped away a tear, and said,
Surely this is strange that such a dog, one of so fine a breed, should lie here in neglect.
The swineherd answered, He belongs to a master who died far away. When the master is away,
the slaves are unmindful of their duty. As he spoke the dog looked up at Ulysses, dropped his head upon the ground, and died.
Twenty years had he waited for his master; now at last he saw him. The swineherd and the beggar entered the hall.
When Telemachus saw them, he took from the basket bread and meat and bade the servant carry them to the beggar,
and also tell him that he might go around among the suitors, asking alms. So Ulysses went,
stretching out his hand and noting what kind of men these suitors were. Some gave, having pity on him,
but of all Antinous was the most shameless, saying, Get yourself away from my table.
Then Ulysses said, Surely your soul is evil, though your body is fair; for though you yourself sit at another man's feast,
yet you will give me nothing. Antinous, in great wrath, took the stool on which he sat and threw it at Ulysses,
striking his right shoulder. Ulysses stirred not, but stood as a rock. In his heart he thought of revenge.
But he went back, and standing in the door, he said: Hear me, suitors of the queen!
Antinous has struck me because I am poor. May the curse of the hungry light on him, ere he come to his marriage day!
