Ulysses and his men, bending to their oars with all their might, soon came again to the island and found their comrades.

After sailing many days, Ulysses and his companions came to the island of Aeolus, king of the winds, who dwelt there with his children,

six sons and six daughters. Aeolus welcomed them and feasted them for a month,

while he heard from Ulysses the story of all that had been done at Troy.

When Ulysses begged him to help them on their way to Ithaca, Aeolus gave him the skin of an ox.

In this he had bound all the contrary winds, so that they could not hinder the Greeks.

But he let a gentle west wind blow to help them on their way. For nine days the wind blew, and Ulysses held the helm.

Then they came so near to Ithaca that they saw the lights of their homes, and Ulysses, being worn out, fell asleep.

While he slept, one of his comrades said, Strange how men love this Ulysses. He comes back from Troy with much spoil,

but we with empty hands. Let us see what Aeolus has given him in this ox-hide.

So the men loosed the great bag, and lo! all the winds rushed out, and carried them far from their country.

Ulysses, waking with the tumult of winds and waves, was in despair.
尤利西斯很絕望，他在風浪的旋渦中醒來。
He covered his face and sat thus, while the ships were driven by the winds once more to the island of Aeolus.
他遮住自己的臉坐了下來，航船再一次乘著風將他們帶到了埃俄羅斯島。
The king of the winds was much surprised to see Ulysses again, and refused further help,
風神很奇怪地再次看到尤利西斯，并拒絕繼續提供幫助，
saying: Begone. We may not help him whom the gods hate, and hated of them you surely are.

So they set forth again, toiling wearily at the oars, sad at heart. As they passed a land where a race of giants lived,

the giants cast great stones upon the ships, destroying all of them save that of Ulysses himself.

He had started from Troy with twelve ships, and now but one remained. On they sailed, mourning for their lost comrades.
