THE WANDERINGS OF ULYSSES Alfred J. Church
In another great poem, the Odyssey, Homer tells of the wanderings and adventures of the Greek chief, Ulysses,
during his return from the Trojan war. This poem is so famous and so widely known that the word Odyssey has come to mean wanderings.
THE GIANT POLYPHEMUS
When the great city of Troy was taken, the chiefs who had fought against it set sail for their homes. But the gods were angry,
for the Greeks had been haughty and cruel in the day of their victory.
Therefore they did not all find a safe and happy return. Some were shipwrecked, while others found everything at home
so changed that they had to seek new dwellings elsewhere. Ulysses, one of the mightiest of the great chiefs,
was among the last to sail from Troy. His home was the island, Ithaca, where he expected to find his wife, Penelope,
and his young son, Telemachus, whom he had left an infant ten years before. Ulysses had twelve ships,
and in each were fifty men, scarcely half of those who had set out with him from Greece,
for many valiant heroes slept the last sleep on the plain and on the seashore.
Ulysses with his men first sailed northwest to a land whose people had been friendly to the Trojans.
Here they captured the city and in it much plunder: slaves and oxen and jars of fragrant wine.
They might have escaped unhurt, but they stayed to feast and make merry on the shore, where the people attacked them.
The Greeks were driven to their ships, and lost some seventy men.
Then Ulysses and his companions journeyed safely on till they came to the southern shore of Greece;
之后尤利西斯和他的伙伴安全起航,直到他們來到了希臘的南部海岸;
but contrary currents prevented their sailing around the point, and the north wind blew so fiercely they were driven ever southward.
