At last Little John bade the friar call off his dogs. As he did not do so, Little John let fly some arrows,

Robin Hood called to Little John to come with him to church in Nottingham.

As was their custom, they took their bows, and on the way Little John proposed that they should have a shooting contest.

At this Robin became angry and struck Little John with his hand. Little John was not the man to bear being treated so,

At this, Robin was ashamed of what he had done, but his pride would not allow him to say so; and he continued his way to Nottingham.

Not without fears, he entered the church, for the Sheriff of the town was his enemy.

The Sheriff was not slow to do what he was bidden. He called his men to follow him, and marched to the church.

The noise they made in entering caused Robin to look round. Alas, alas, he said to himself, now will I miss Little John.

But he drew his two-handed sword and fought so savagely that twelve of the Sheriff's men lay dead before him.
