Far away on the other side of the mountains, Charlemagne heard that sound.
從山背面遙遠的地方，查理曼大帝聽到了戰斗的聲音。
"I hear Roland's horn," he cried. "Roland calls to me for help, I must go to him."
他喊道：“我聽到了羅蘭的號角，羅蘭叫我去援助，我必須去救他。”
Then the king with his great army turned back to help the guard.
于是，國王和他的大軍掉頭去支援守衛軍。
While Charlemagne and his army were hastening back over the mountains, the soldiers of the guard were fighting bravely.
查理曼大帝和他的軍隊快速翻越高山時，守衛軍正在奮勇作戰。
At last a coward struck Oliver from behind with his spear.
最后，一個怯懦的士兵用長矛從背后刺向奧利弗。
Then Oliver called Roland to him, for he knew that he was dying.
隨后，奧利弗把羅蘭喊到他跟前，因為他知道自己不行了。
Roland ran quickly to his comrade and put his arms about the wounded warrior.
羅蘭很快跑向自己的戰友，把手臂放在這位受傷的勇士身上。
"O Oliver, my friend, how can I live without you!" he cried.
“奧利弗，我的朋友，沒有你我怎么能活下去！”他哭了。
Oliver spoke loving words to Roland; then his head dropped on Roland's shoulder, and the brave knight died.
奧利弗對羅蘭說了些體貼的話語后，頭就垂在了羅蘭肩上，勇敢的騎士戰死沙場。
For hours the battle went on.
戰斗持續了幾個小時。
At last Roland alone was left to fight the enemy.
最后，羅蘭與敵人孤軍奮戰。
But not one of the Saracens dared to come within reach of his sword.
但沒有一個撒拉遜人敢靠近他的劍。
Suddenly, as they circled around him, fearing to come near, they heard the trumpets of Charlemagne.
就在他們把他團團包圍，不敢靠近的時候，他們突然聽到查理曼大帝的號角。
"The trumpets of France," they cried. "The great Charles is coming. We must escape while there is yet time!"
“法國人的號角，”他們喊道。“查理曼大帝來了，我們必須趕快逃離！”
So four hundred of the bravest Saracens went as near to Roland as they dared and threw their spears at him.
于是，四百個最勇敢的撒拉遜人壯著膽子靠近羅蘭，向他扔去長矛。
Then they fled from the field.
然后，他們四散而逃。
Again the trumpets rang out, and this time the sound was near at hand.
號角再次響起，這一次聲音近在咫尺。
But Roland knew that Charlemagne's army had come too late.
但是，羅蘭知道查理曼的軍隊來的太遲了。
Oliver was dead, and so were all the other faithful friends who had followed him to battle.
奧利弗已戰死，其他跟隨他作戰的忠實戰友也都犧牲了。
Roland himself was so badly wounded that he knew he could not live.
羅蘭自己深受重傷，他知道自己快不行了。
He climbed a little hill and lay down under a pine tree with his face toward the land of Spain, closing his eyes as if to sleep.
他爬上一座小山，躺在一棵松樹下，臉朝著西班牙的土地，閉上了雙眼，仿佛沉睡過去一樣。
When Charlemagne and his army came, they found him lying there, and they knew that France had lost her greatest warrior and her noblest knight.
查理曼大帝的軍隊到后，發現羅蘭躺在那里，他們知道法國失去了最偉大的戰士和最高貴的騎士。
