Always he was thinking and planning how he could get it back.

He did not need the gold, for the kings had given him rich presents; yet day and night he thought of his loss.

Now Regin knew that a battle must be fought to win back his treasure, and he himself was not brave enough to fight.

So year after year he watched for someone who would get the treasure for him.

When he saw Sigurd growing up brave and strong, he thought, "This boy has great strength and is afraid of nothing.

He shall fight my battle and win my treasure for me!"

So Regin went to King Alf and said that he would like to teach Sigurd, and give him skill in making swords and armor.

The king looked at Regin a moment and then said: "O Regin, truly you are very wise, and it would be well for the boy to learn some things from you.
國王看了雷金一會兒，然后說：“雷金，你真的很聰明，這孩子能跟你學東西是好事。
But he is loving and truthful, and I would keep him so.
但他誠實友愛，我會一直讓他這樣下去。
You love no one. You would deceive even me, your king and your friend.

Teach Sigurd, if you wish, but teach him not to hate and lie."
如果你想教西格德，可以，但要教他不要仇恨和撒謊。”
Regin answered in a low voice: "Have no fear, O King. This boy will never lie, and his heart will always be full of love.
雷金低聲回答說：“不要害怕，國王，西格德永遠不會說謊，他的心里永遠充滿了愛。
But great deeds shall he do in the years to come, and the whole world shall hear the name of Sigurd!"
但在未來的歲月里，他會做出偉大的事情，西格德的名字將會家喻戶曉!”
After this Sigurd spent part of each day with Regin, who taught him many things which a prince should know.
之后，西格德每天花部分時間和雷金在一起，雷金教給他許多貴族應該知道的事情。
When his hours of study were over, the boy would hurry away into the forest to play with the other children.
幾個小時的學習結束后，西格德匆忙跑到森林里去和其他孩子玩耍。
