Seizing the sword, Beowulf lifted it high above his head, and struck with all his might.

Instantly the monster fell dead. Then a strange thing happened.

The blade of the sword melted away, and only the hilt was left in his hand.

Looking about him, Beowulf saw piles of gold and silver on every side.
貝奧武夫環(huán)顧四周,發(fā)現(xiàn)四周都是成堆的金銀財(cái)寶。
He gazed in wonder at the treasure, but he did not touch it.
他驚奇地盯著寶藏,但沒有拿。
He had gone down into the lake to save the Danes from their terrible enemy.
他下到湖里從怪物手中救出丹麥人。
He had won the victory, but he would not make himself rich with the evil monster’s gold.
他贏得了勝利,但他不愿用那邪惡的怪物的金子使自己發(fā)財(cái)。

One thing only did Beowulf take from the cave.
貝奧武夫只從山洞里拿走了一樣?xùn)|西。
He still held in his hand the hilt of the wonderful sword.
他手里仍然握著那把神奇寶劍。
This he would take to King Hrothgar, and together they would read the strange writing on the twisted gold.
他要把這封信交給赫洛斯加國王,他們一起讀那扭曲的金柄上奇怪的字跡。
So up from the dark lake came Beowulf, and back he went to the king’s palace.
于是貝奧武夫從暗湖上來了,回到王宮。
The king and queen came forward to meet him, and all the warriors crowded around.
國王和王后走上前來迎接他,所有的勇士都圍了上來。
When Beowulf had told of his battle under the water, he gave the hilt of the sword to Hrothgar.
貝奧武夫告訴他水下之戰(zhàn),把劍柄給了赫羅斯加。
All around the hilt was written a story which told that the sword had been made for a giant, hundreds of years before.
劍柄周圍描述了一個(gè)故事,說是這把劍是幾百年前為一個(gè)巨人打造。
