Suddenly a cry rang through the building.

When the men started up and seized their swords, the monster fled, but the Danes found that one of their bravest warriors had been killed.

Then there was great mourning in the hall, and messengers were sent to tell the sad news to the king.

Some of the men then ran to wake Beowulf, who was asleep in the king's palace.

Surprised at the sudden call, Beowulf and his warriors hastened to the king.

A monster from the lake has killed one of my bravest companions!"

"Do not weep, O King," said Beowulf.
“別哭了,國(guó)王,”貝奧武夫說(shuō)。
"Let me see the track of this monster and give me one day, and I promise to slay this enemy, also."
“讓我看看這個(gè)怪物的行蹤,給我一天時(shí)間,我保證也要?dú)⑺肋@個(gè)敵人。”
Following the tracks, Beowulf and the king came to the shore of the dark lake.
貝奧武夫和國(guó)王沿著小路來(lái)到了暗湖邊。
Then the great hero once more made ready for battle.
于是這位偉大的英雄又一次做好了戰(zhàn)斗的準(zhǔn)備。
He put on his coat of steel and his helmet, which no blade could cut. In his strong right hand he carried his gleaming sword.
他穿上鋼鐵外衣,戴上刀鋒無(wú)法割傷的頭盔。他有力的右手握著閃閃發(fā)光的劍。
