Soon all the air was filled with the sound of swift feet, as the children came running.
很快，匆匆的腳步聲從四處傳來，孩子們都跑了過來。
When they reached the Little Baker's tent, he was putting loaves on the white table.
他們跑到小面包師帳篷的時候，面包師正在把面包放在白色的桌子上。
This is mine, said the biggest boy, taking the very largest loaf.
“這個是我的。”最大的男孩說著拿起了最大的那個面包。
Then he threw down his money and ran away to eat the bread all by himself.
他隨即扔下錢就跑開了，自己一個人吃面包去了。
Then came a girl, who cried out, "Give me my loaf, and give it to me at once! Don't you see my money? Don't keep me waiting!"
這時候，一個小姑娘過來了，她大聲說道：“把我的面包給我，馬上給我！沒看到我的錢嗎？不要讓我等！”
The Little Baker did not say a word.
小面包師一句話也沒說。
He did not smile; he did not look cross; he did not hurry.
他沒有笑，看起來也沒有生氣，還是不慌不忙。
He gave the girl her loaf and watched her, as she, too, hurried away to eat the bread.
他把面包給了小姑娘，看著她也跑開個人吃面包去了。
Quickly others came crowding and pushing with their money.
很快，其他人都擠了過來，手里舉著錢。
Each of them took a loaf and ran off, without a word of thanks, to eat it all by himself.
每個人拿了面包就離開，一句感謝的話也沒有，都各自吃面包去了。
The very little children looked on sadly and could not get near the table.
年紀很小的孩子傷心地看著，無法接近桌子。
After a while all the biggest loaves were gone, and only the smallest ones were left.
過了一會兒，所有的大面包都沒有了，只剩下了一些小面包。
Then came the little girl, who laid down her penny, saying softly, "May I have a loaf, please, and thank you for making all this good bread for us."
這時候，那個小姑娘才過來，放下了她的錢，輕聲細語地說：“請給我拿個面包，謝謝你為我們做了這么好的面包。”
Off she went, hand in hand with the little lame boy. The Baker smiled at them.
然后，她和那個跛腿的小男孩手拉著手離開了。面包師對他們露出了微笑。
Next there came up to the Baker a boy who looked kind and merry.
下一個來到面包師前面的是一個看起來非常友善快樂的男孩。
He laid down all the pennies he had, and took as many of the loaves as his money would pay for.

Then he gave loaves to those who were too poor to buy them and to the little children who were afraid to come to the tent.

After that he took all these children to a pleasant spot, where they sat down happily to eat their loaves.
