But an old woman who lived up in the tower of the castle hid her spinning wheel.

"No one shall burn it," she said to herself." It will be safe up here in the tower."

As time passed, the fairy gifts came to the young princess.

She grew to be good and kind and wise and beautiful.

Everyone who saw her, loved her.

On the day when the princess became fifteen years old, it happened that the king and queen were suddenly called away from home.

The young girl was left in the castle, with no one to watch what she did; so she went about looking into all sorts of places, just as she liked.

At last she came to the room in the tower of the castle.

A key was in the door, and when the princess turned it, the door opened.
