ALICE TRAVELS IN JUNGLELAND
MARY HASTINGS BRADLEY
This is a true story of Alice Bradley, whose home is in Chicago. Her father and mother went to Africa with some friends to study the animals and people of the strange and beautiful land. Alice went with them on their travels. This story tells you how they marched from day to day, and of the black men, called "boys", who carried their baggage.
WHAT THE TRAVELERS CARRIED
It made Alice laugh to see how many things a white man needed in Africa: his tent, his cot and blankets, his clothing, his folding-chairs and tables, his guns and bullets, his cameras, his food-boxes and cooking-pans and medicines.

The black man traveled with just the goatskin that he wore day and night, his spear, his knife, his gourd for water, and a little bag in which he carried his pipe and tobacco and a little food.
A strong black man can take sixty pounds on his head and walk with it from four to eight hours a day.
It took two hundred black men to carry all the things that this party of six people needed in the jungle. They had sixty-five boxes of food alone! And the matches they carried were nearly enough to make a full load for one porter. The natives made fire by twirling a piece of very hard wood in a hole in a piece of very soft wood. With just a few twirls they made a spark glow in the soft wood.
