AN EXCITING RACE
一場刺激的比賽
Saturday morning at ten o'clock nearly all of the boys who were to be in the race were at their meeting place, the vacant lot on Pine Street. Each Sunnysider wore a yellow band around his left arm, and each Shadysider wore a brown band. Mr.Thompson, the physical director of the school, who was to be the umpire, had already come. A big crowd of boys and girls was standing around, waiting to see the race.
星期六早晨十點鐘的時候，幾乎所有參賽的男孩們都到了集合地——松樹街的空地上。每個陽光隊的隊員都在左臂上戴黃色袖標，每個陰涼隊的隊員都帶棕色袖標。裁判員是學校體育部的主任湯普森先生，他已經到了。一大群男孩女孩們站在周圍等著觀看比賽。
"Why isn't Andy here?" asked Buddy. "We're going to start in a few minutes. Tom, you run to his house and see what's wrong."
“安迪怎么還沒來，”巴迪問道，“還有幾分鐘比賽就要開始了。湯姆，你跑到他家里去看看怎么回事？”
Just then Andy and Francis came hurrying up.
就在這時，安迪和弗朗西斯匆匆忙忙趕來了。
"Buddy, I'm not going to skate," Andy began quietly. "Francis is going to take my place."
“巴迪，我不參加比賽了，”安迪開始平靜地說，“弗朗西斯將代替我?！?/div>

"What's the matter, Andy? Hurt yourself?"
“怎么了？安迪，你受傷了嗎？”
"No, but I've decided not to skate in this race."
“沒有，但是我已經決定不參加今天的比賽了。”
Buddy and all the other Sunnysiders looked surprised.
巴迪和其他的陽光隊隊員都吃驚地看著他。
"Lost your nerve, did you?" called out one of the boys.
“退縮了，是嗎？”其中一個男孩喊道。
Andy's face grew red. "No, I didn't!" he answered, "but I'm not going to skate in this race. Francis Frame is going to take my place. He's a better skater than I am."
安迪的臉變紅了。“不，我沒有，”他回答說，“但是我不會參加這場比賽，弗朗西斯·福雷姆將代替我。他比我滑得好?！?/div>
Buddy took Andy aside. "That new boy can't skate. You're just giving the race away to the Shadysiders. Come on and take your place." begged the captain.
巴迪把安迪帶到一邊，“那個新來的男孩不能滑冰，你正在將比賽的勝利送給陰涼隊。別泄氣，回到自己的位置?！标犻L懇求道。
"You just wait and see if he can't skate!" Andy exclaimed. "I know he'll help win the race. Anyway, I'm not going to skate."
“你就等著看他是否能滑冰吧。”安迪大聲喊道，“我知道他會幫我們贏得比賽，無論如何我都不會滑得?！?/div>
Just then Mr. Thompson shouted, "First skaters come to the starting-place. It's time to begin."
就在這時，湯普森先生喊道：“第一組滑冰隊員們到位，比賽開始了?！?/div>
Each Sunnysider was lined up with a member of the other team who was about his own size for only two boys were to race at a time. The first two boys took their places at the starting-point. Then Mr. Thompson blew the whistle.
因為每次只有兩個男孩比賽，陽光隊的每個隊員都與對方一名與自己個頭相當的隊員站在一起。第一組的兩個男孩在起點就位后，湯音森先生吹響了口哨。
