Andy skated slowly toward the end of the block. It was a shame, he thought, about Francis Frame. He hadn't lived in the block very long, and none of the other boys knew him. So the new boy was left to himself a great deal, and must often be very lonely.
安迪慢慢得向街區的盡頭滑去，他想弗朗西斯·福雷姆會很遺憾。他住在街區的時間還不長，其他的男孩都不認識他，所以新來的男孩大部分時間都是自己一個人，肯定會經常感到孤單。
"Yes," said Andy to himself, "it certainly is a shame about Francis! I ought to do something about it."

As he skated to the vacant lot on the corner, he was met by the captain of the Sunnysiders, a large boy called Buddy Bowers.
安迪滑到拐角的空地時，遇見了陽光隊的對長，一個名叫巴迪·鮑爾斯的大男孩。
"It's time you got here! We were just going to start without you."
“你來得正好，我們剛要不等你就開始了。”
"I stopped for a few moments to talk to my new neighbor," said Andy. "Say, Buddy, don't you think we could use another boy on our team? That new boy, Francis Frame, I mean?"
“我來得路上停下來跟我的新鄰居聊了一會兒，”安迪說，“巴迪，你覺得我們隊里可以再加一個男孩嗎？那個新來的男孩，我是說弗朗西斯·福雷姆。”
"No, we can't use any more boys, Andy. Besides, he doesn't belong in our gang. He looked sort of lonesome."

"We just can't do it. The Shadysiders only have five on their team, and they wouldn't let us take on an extra boy."

"I hadn't thought of that," Andy replied.
“我沒有想過。”安迪回答說。
"No, we couldn't have more on our team than the Shadysiders have."
“對，我們的隊員不能比陰涼隊的多。”
Every afternoon the sound of skating was heard on both sides of Pine Street. Andy practiced very hard, for his heart was set on having the Sunnysiders win the race. Still, he couldn't help knowing that his short legs kept him from being a fast skater. Once Buddy had said to him, "Those Shadysiders have some good skaters on their team. We'll have to go like the wind to beat them. Can't you skate a little faster, Andy?"
每天下午，松樹街兩邊都會響起滑冰的聲音。安迪練習得很刻苦，因為他的心里一直想著要讓陽光隊贏得比賽，但是他忍不住會想，他的短腿妨礙了他成為一名速滑隊員。巴迪曾經跟他說“陰涼隊里有一些優秀的滑冰隊員，他們必須像風一樣迅速才能打敗他們。你能不能滑得再快一點兒，安迪？”
