在從前點油燈的時代，要在晚上工作就得點燈油（bum oil)。如果油燈一直點到午夜（midnight)，表示熬夜工作。現今雖然巳經不用油燈照明，我們仍然以bum the midnight oil表示「開夜車（工作、讀書、寫作）」。
