on fire

這個短語，首先我們知道on fire可以表示著火。比如：

Look at that smoke, that building must be on fire.
看那些煙，那幢大樓一定是失火了。

不過，在口語中，on fire還有一個非常常用的用法：

Something is on fire 或是 Someone is on fire 都是老美口語上很喜歡用的講法, 指的是某件事銳不可擋或是指某人很厲害。

例如你今天去打棒球一共打出了三支全壘打, 那老美就會稱贊你說, "You are really on fire today!" 同樣的道理, 你說某支股票著火了 (on fire), 指的就是它氣勢銳不可擋, 可能一天之內股價就漲了 50%. 我還聽過一個同樣很有趣的說法, CNBC 的主播說, "The stock is riding a horse on fire." (這支股票騎在一匹著了火的馬上.) 言下之意呢? 當然也是指這支股票實在太會飆了。

還有一個短語，叫做set the world on fire 表示非常成功；一鳴驚人。

例如：You don't have to set the world on fire. Just do a good job. 你不需要一鳴驚人，做好自己的工作就行。
