【詞義辨析】
restrain, check, refrain, bridle, curb, inhibit,
restrain: 含義廣，指用強力或權力去阻止或限制某人做某事。
check: 多指阻止前進或繼續發展。
refrain: 常指暫時對某種行動或沖動的抑制。
bridle: 指抑制住強烈的感情或欲望。
curb: 可指急劇或果斷的制止，也可指用嚴格的方法加以控制。
inhibit: 主要指抑制愿望、情緒或念頭，也指制止某物的蔓延。
【詞語用法】
1.美國人常將check指“支票”，而英國人則常用cheque；
2.check作及物動詞時，詞組check up指“查核”，而check作不及物動詞時，表示“查核”用check up on；
3.check with指“跟……符合”，check up with指“和……符合”。

besides, but, except, except for,
besides: 著重于指另外還有。
but: 側重指不包括在內。
except: 側重于排除在外，從整體里減去?？膳cbut換用，但語氣較強。
except for: 多用于在說明基本情況或對主要部分加以肯定，還引出相反的原因或細節，從而部分地修正前面的主要意思，含惋惜意味。
【詞語用法】
1.besides同beside的比較：
beside只作介詞，指“在……的旁邊”，“與……相比”，或“與……無關”。
He is sitting beside the mayor.
他坐在市長的旁邊。
That is beside the question.
那個與問題無關。
besides既可作介詞，指“除……之外”，也可作副詞，指“也，此外”。
There are six members besides Mr and Mrs Winston.
溫斯頓夫婦外，還有6個成員。
I am very tired, besides, I have a cold.

2.besides后偶接不含to的不定式。
That day I had nothing to do besides answer letters.

糾正：Besides English, she knows Japnese and French.
